Denim care field notes
Good maintenance starts by identifying the type of wear. This guide helps you decide what to do before commissioning a repair.
Frayed hem
Photograph the hem while the garment is being worn with your usual shoes. Decide whether to preserve the original worn edge or request a clean finish.
Thin fabric at the inner thigh
Reinforcing fabric before a hole develops can retain more of the original cloth. A repairer should inspect the surrounding area, not just the visible tear.
Broken pocket lining
Empty the pocket and inspect the seam and lining separately. A patch may solve a small tear; extensive damage may require replacing the pocket bag.
Before washing
Follow the garment care label. Turn jeans inside out when appropriate, avoid unnecessary heat, and let the fabric dry fully before storage.
Questions to ask a repairer
- Will the repair be visible?
- Will the fabric still stretch and move?
- What parts may need replacement?
- Can the garment be inspected before any price is quoted?
